Environment art sits at the intersection of technical skill and spatial design. Getting geometry right is only part of the job. The harder part is understanding why a space reads as believable or empty, tense or calm — and knowing which tools to use to achieve a specific feeling.

This course is for people who already know their way around a 3D application and want to work at a higher level. You should be comfortable with basic modelling and have some familiarity with a game engine before enrolling.

The technical side

We cover modular asset design in depth — building sets of pieces that tile and combine without visible repetition. Students work with Substance Painter for texturing, focusing on realistic wear patterns, material variation, and the kind of detail that reads well under different lighting conditions.

Performance is treated as a design constraint, not an afterthought. LOD systems, draw call budgets, and texture atlasing are introduced early and referenced throughout every project task.

Design decisions, not just techniques

Technical skill without design thinking produces technically correct but visually flat environments. Each module includes analysis of published game environments — what the art director was prioritising, how the colour palette was restricted to create coherence, where geometry detail was concentrated and why.

    • Two rounds of structured instructor critique
